Act of Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. |

A PRAYER FOR PEACE BY POPE FRANCIS
Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!
We have tried so many times and over so many years
to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms.
How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced?
how much blood has been shed?
how many lives have been shattered?
how many hopes have been buried?
But our efforts have been in vain.
Now, Lord, come to our aid!
Grant us peace, teach us peace;
guide our steps in the way of peace.
Open our eyes and our hearts,
and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost".
Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.
Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love,
you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters.
Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace;
enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister.
Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens
who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace,
our trepidation into confident trust,
and our quarreling into forgiveness.
Keep alive within us the flame of hope,
so that with patience and perseverance
we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation.
In this way may peace triumph at last,
and may the words "division," "hatred," and "war"
be banished from the heart of every man and woman.
Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands.
Renew our hearts and minds,
so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother,"
and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!
Amen.

Gospel Meditation: Feeling Short on Faith?
By: Fr. Jarrod Waugh, CSC, Pastor
I often encounter people out in public who, on seeing my collar, feel impelled to say something to me like, “Hey, Padre. I was raised Catholic you know, and…” Most of these conversations are innocuous and I find a way to end the best of them with something like, “nice to meet you, if you ever want to come back, you know where to find me!” But a great many of these conversations, even the shorter ones, will betray that the person had become, for some reason or another, fossilized in an understanding of God or of faith that might have made sense for Second Grade First Communion class, but which clearly is insufficient for a mature and seasoned believer. Maybe that’s why many people stop practicing their faith— they outgrow it. Or, to be more precise, they outgrow an early version of their understanding of the faith and never find or grow into a more mature faith.
One of the inspiring and yet simple elements of the story of Zacchaeus is his willingness to take initiative in order to find Jesus. He couldn’t see Jesus from where he currently was, so he went on a (small) quest to put himself in a better position in which he might encounter Him. He realized that he would be stuck if he didn’t make a change, and not insignificantly, he DID make a change in order to give himself a better opportunity. We know that the grace to make that change was itself a gift of the Holy Spirit, but at the same time, Zacchaeus decided to cooperate with that invitation instead of shrugging and saying, “well, I guess God just isn’t going to be around for me.”
If you realize that you are starting to have trouble seeing Jesus from where you are at, or where you have ended up at present, don’t settle for letting Him walk past. Be willing to make a change, large or small, and get to a place of new perspective. Change up your prayer life, start a new act of service to a neighbor, go on a retreat, find some religious art or music to move you. But don’t simply be complacent where you are. You haven’t outgrown God, but you may need to climb up to a new vantage point.
